I used to suffer from insomnia and always had trouble falling asleep at night.
Over the past 15 to 20 years, insomnia has completely destroyed my working life. I was always a high-flier, and worked with one of the largest firms in the city. I got several promotions and did very well during the first six years despite the fact that I struggled with insomnia.
However, when I started having kids the insomnia worsened. I was always exhausted, unable to concentrate and unable to drive. The more tired I became the less I slept; eventually I could not meet my contractual obligations and became unfit for work. I felt as if I was starting to develop mental health problems – anxiety and depression – and that my child was at risk. My stomach hurt, my head hurt, and I cried repeatedly. My boss regularly asked personal questions about my mental health, and even criticized me for seeming downbeat and tired!
I was eventually signed off work by a doctor and was able to take three weeks off. He offered to give me prescription sleeping pills for the sleepless nights. I knew they weren't the answer, it has to be some better ways!
I’ve tried literally everything - chiropractic, body massage, sleep therapy, you name it. I even spent thousands on expensive pillows and bedding hoping to put a stop to this mess, but they DID LITERALLY NOTHING.
